Designating a beneficiary is important to ensure your HSA funds easily transfer to your loved ones when you're gone. And, understanding what happens to your HSA funds after you are gone will affect your beneficiary choice. You may designate a beneficiary to receive your HSA funds in the event of your death. To do so, simply sign the Beneficiary Designation form which will automatically be sent to the email address associated with your account or call us and ask for one to be sent to you.

If your beneficiary is your spouse, they can assume ownership of the account if the accountholder passes away. If your beneficiary is anyone other than your spouse, the HSA funds are given to the beneficiary, at which time those funds will be taxed.
